Get To Know Us!

At our organization, we believe that taking care of others starts with taking care of ourselves and each other. Our therapists are more than just colleagues—they’re a community of passionate individuals who support one another both professionally and personally. We foster an environment where collaboration, encouragement, and laughter are just as important as clinical expertise. Whether it’s sharing ideas in team meetings, celebrating personal milestones, or enjoying fun activities like team outings or holiday events, we prioritize creating a culture of connection and joy. By uplifting one another, we ensure that we show up as our best selves for our clients, and we model the very resilience and balance we encourage in those we serve.

Nicole Richardson, LCSW, TF-CBT, DBT, Clinical Director

Hi! I’m Nicole Richardson, and I’ve been part of the GPSBHS family since 2020. I grew up in the heart of mid-Michigan and later found my way to Eastern North Carolina when I was stationed at Cherry Point during my time in the Marine Corps. My professional journey began in 2017 when I pursued my undergraduate degree in Social Work at UNCW, followed by earning my master’s degree through the University of Southern California. Before joining this amazing agency, I gained valuable experience working in child protective services and with foster children through a fostering agency.

From a young age, I’ve been passionate about being the supportive voice I wished for during my own childhood. My mission is to walk alongside individuals who have faced life’s challenges and provide them with understanding and hope. I am a firm believer in the power of a trauma-informed approach to help others heal in today’s ever-changing world. Since 2022, I’ve been a rostered clinician in TF-CBT through NCCTP, and in January 2024, I became certified in DBT. I specialize in working with self-harm and suicidal ideation, sexual abuse, and personality disorders.

I live by the philosophy that we are always learning and growing. Every day, I strive to show up as my best self to support those I work with. The therapeutic process is a journey I truly treasure, and I believe a strong therapeutic bond is one of the most crucial elements in helping others thrive.

When I’m not in the office, you’ll likely find me enjoying life’s adventures. I love hiking, traveling to new places, spending time with my sweet dog, and soaking in the energy of music festivals. These moments of connection and exploration fuel my spirit and remind me of the beauty and resilience that exists in all of us.

Carly Rios, Office Manager

I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to work for Great Place to Start, an organization with a purpose and a mission to help those in our community. I originally hail from Wildwood, NJ and moved to North Carolina in 2011. I obtained my Associate's Degree from Craven Community College in 2018 and have worked in many fields ranging from food service to retail and healthcare, gaining valuable experience along the way. I am grateful for the chance to help others and have access to the wonderful locals that we serve every day, as well as the opportunity to be a good example for my daughter. I love the people of Craven County and hope to make this area my home for years to come!

Queena Mbir, LCSWA

My name is Queena Washington. To start, I was not born a social worker nor have I lived a perfect life. I grew up in poverty and faced obstacles, but I decided early on that this was not my assignment. I live in a world as challenging and nuanced as yours. And I believe that we are all surviving in this crazy world together, so I want to assist where I can in making that just a little easier for everyone I meet the same way that it was done for me.

I am a mother, first and foremost (and a single one at that) to a teenage daughter, which in and of itself comes with certain challenges. I am also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate with over 20 years of experience working with and caring for people. The first 12 years of my career, I spent in nursing with a focus on geriatrics. I then worked for 5 years as a Medical/Administrative Assistant. I finally got my introduction to the mental health field as a Qualified Professional and Peer Support Specialist working with children in an intensive in-home environment, and in the community with individuals who suffer from severe and persistent mental illness respectively. In 2018 I began my work at the Department of Social Services, with the majority of my time spent as an Adult Protective Services Social Worker.

I hold an Associate of Arts in Health Administration (2008), a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (2011), and a Master of Social Work (2022). I am thoroughly knowledgeable of social work principles, techniques, and practices, along with their application to complex cases, group work, and community challenges. I have considerable knowledge of family and group dynamics in addition to governmental/private, organizational, and community resources. I am skilled at working with behavior and socio-economic problems and their treatment, including individuals suffering from severe and persistent mental illness.

I hope that you will allow me to meet you where you are and assist you in attaining your goals. It would be a pleasure to walk with you on your journey to wellness and holistic health. I look forward to meeting you and until then, in my best Iyanla Vanzant voice, “Stay in peace, not in pieces.”

Shannel McDorman, LCSWA

Hi I’m Shannel McDorman. I started with GPSBHS in 2022 as a clinical intern while in grad school. I completed my undergrade in Marriage and Family Studies and I earned my MSW at University of Kentucky. I am so excited to be here at GPSBHS. When I got licensed as an Clinical Social Worker Associate (LCSW-A ) I knew there was nowhere else I wanted to be than right here.

I was born and raised in San Diego, California. My spouse joined the US Navy in 2009, and it is his work in the military that lead our family to North Carolina. Prior to attending grad school, I served as the Ombudsman for NMRTC Camp Lejeune. In this role I supported military families stationed in Jacksonville, NC. It was while serving as the command’s ombudsman that I developed a passion for helping individuals and families dealing with extremely stressful situations in their daily lives. While working here at GPSBHS I have found that the trauma-informed approach speaks to me and prompted me to seek more in this modality. I am honored to be trusted by my clients to walk with them on their journey.
